Supporting Maltese Businesses Exporting to Africa, from Malta or anywhere in the world
The 8th annual Africa Logistics Network (ALN) was held in Muscat, Oman between the 11th and 14th of September 2022. EuroBridge’s Director, David Abela, and CEO, Robert Cassar took part in this year’s event.
Their main objective was to find ways to continue developing the company’s solutions across Africa for the benefit of our clients in Malta.
Trading with African Nations is Set to Continue Increasing
The African continent is made up of 54 widely-recognised nations with incredibly varied wealth, development levels, and living standards. As a whole, over 60% of the continent’s exports consist of commodities and other raw materials.
Tanzania and South Africa, for example, have substantial gold mines, whilst diamonds are commonly exported from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Namibia. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, is one of the world’s largest exporters of Platinum.
Further North, the economies of Tunisia and Morocco are significantly dependent on the production and export of textiles, shoes, and clothing. Cotton, meanwhile, is a major export in Mali and Benin, among other African nations.
According to a study by the European Centre for Development Policy Management, the EU remains the continent’s biggest single economic partner. This study shows that whilst the export of primary goods has decreased, there was an increase in the export of manufactured goods.
Developing Tomorrow’s Logistics Network
Whilst a significant amount of trade, and therefore shipments, travel between East and West, this trend is likely to be challenged in coming years and decades. Cheap labour alone will likely no longer justify production in the East to the extent that it has done in recent history.
With the costs of global shipping rising, Western retailers and manufacturing industries are exploring novel solutions. Some of these solutions include relocating to emerging African nations that are developing stable and functioning democracies.
Businesses in Malta are also exploring business opportunities in various African nations. This is one of the reasons behind the EuroBridge team’s decision to participate in this year’s ALN.
